L(y)earning, poem by Michelle Shegelski.
Photography & letterpress by Sylvia Douglas.
In June 2012 we lost a dear friend to tragedy & on the 5th Memorial I made this print inspired by Michelle's blog of poetry, political musings, and personal posts.
I took B&W photographs on Ilford HP5 high contrast film of the memorial tree planted in honour of her and her fallen colleagues. I hand processed those photographs, scanned them, and then silk screened three of the images together before type setting and letterpressing her words. I made enough prints for close friends and her beloved family.
Grief is not a linear process, as it ebbs and flows every year, month, or day. It never goes away, we just learn new ways to live with it. Making this print was a beautiful and personal way for me to work with my grief.
Miss you & love you
